Bharatpur, Rajasthan, is one of India’s best-known destinations for bird watching, wildlife photography, nature walks and peaceful wetland exploration. Its biggest attraction is Keoladeo National Park, also known as Keoladeo Ghana National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
The park is internationally recognized for its rich birdlife, seasonal wetlands and importance as a habitat for resident and migratory birds. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an excellent destination for nature lovers, families, photographers and visitors exploring Rajasthan’s heritage circuit.

2. Famous birds to see
Painted Stork
A striking large waterbird with a long bill, colourful plumage and pinkish tail feathers. Often seen feeding and nesting in groups.
Sarus Crane
India’s tallest flying bird, known for its red head and elegant appearance. Sightings depend on season and local conditions.
Bar-headed Goose
A famous winter visitor, recognized by the dark bars across the back of its white head.
Kingfishers
Small, colourful birds often spotted near water, where they hunt fish and other aquatic prey.
Black-necked Stork
A large and impressive wetland bird that is especially exciting for wildlife photographers.
Northern Pintail and Other Ducks
Winter can bring numerous migratory ducks and other waterfowl to suitable wetland areas.
Other birds include egrets, herons, cormorants, pelicans, ibis, owls, eagles, warblers and many other resident and seasonal species. The exact birds you see depend on water levels, season and habitat conditions.
3. Best time to visit Bharatpur for bird watching
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | November–February | Best overall period for migratory birds and waterfowl |
| Autumn | October–November | Migratory birds begin arriving, depending on conditions |
| Spring | March–April | Resident birds, changing bird activity and pleasant morning visits |
| Summer | May–June | Hot weather; early visits are essential |
| Monsoon | July–September | Breeding and nesting activity, especially for waterbirds when habitat conditions are favourable |
The Rajasthan Forest Department identifies October to February as the main migratory-bird season and July to September as a breeding period for waterbirds.
My recommendation: Visit between November and February if your main goal is to see a variety of migratory birds. However, sightings are never guaranteed, and water availability can significantly affect bird numbers.
4. Park timings and entry fees
The park generally opens from sunrise to sunset. Early morning and late afternoon are particularly rewarding for bird watching. Exact seasonal opening and closing times should be confirmed before travelling.
